short circuit is simply a low resistance connection between the two conductors supplying electrical power to any circuit. This results in excessive current flow in the power source through the 'short,' and may even cause the power source to be destroyed. If a fuse is in the supply circuit, it will do its job and blow out, opening the circuit and stopping the current flow.

The current in a circuit depends on the rating of the  appliances connected to it. The choice of wires depends upon the maximum current estimated to pass through them. If the total power rating of the appliances  exceeds this permitted limit, they tend to draw a large current. This is known as overloading.

Electrical circuits are designed to handle a limited amount of electricity. An overload occurs when you draw more electricity than a circuit can safely handle. If there were no breaker in the circuit, an overload would cause the circuit wiring to overheat, which could melt the wire insulation and lead to a fire.
