Explain what is valency? how to find valency of an element?
Answers
☯ ANSWER:-
WHAT IS VALENCY?!
The number of electrons gained or lost by an atom from it's outermost shell or valence shell in order to attain it's octet configuration is termed as it's valency.
In general, it is known as the combining capacity of an atom or the number of electrons present in the outermost shell.
HOW TO FIND THE VAL£NCY OF AN ATOM??
→Octet configuration:-
The presence of eight number of electrons in the outermost shell or valence shell.
Egs.:-
* Na (11) = 2,8,1 → The outermost shell has 1 electron. Thus, Sodium doesn't have octet. If it loses one of it's electrons, then it attains it's octet. Therefore, it's valency is 1.
* F (9) = 2,7 → Fluorine has 7 electrons in it's outermost shell. Therefore, it needs to gain one more electron to attain it's octet. Hence it's valency is 1.
*Ne (10) = 2,8 → Neon has 8 electrons in its outermost shell. Therefore, it doesn't need any electrons. Hence, it's valency is 0.
→ Duplet Configuration:-
The presence of 2 electrons in the innermost K shell with K shell as the valence shell is termed as a Duplet.
Egs:-
He (Helium) = 2 [Naturally]
H (Hydrogen)= 1 (Needs to gain 1 more electron to attain duplet)
Be (Beryllium) = 3 (Needs to loss 1 electron to attain duplet)
