Answer:

According to the traditional biography of the Buddha, the prince Siddhartha Gautama, profoundly disturbed by the universal experience of suffering in the world, abandoned his young family at age 29 to become a shramana or wandering ascetic, and to search for the solution to the problem of suffering. This departure for a spiritual life was a standard practice in India, but generally was done only by older men, when they had fulfilled their worldly duties. Siddhartha could not wait.

The young prince studied meditation under 2 different teachers, Arada Kalama and Udraka Ramaputra, and mastered their respective systems. As far as these teachers were concerned, he had reached as much spiritual realization as there was to reach, but Siddhartha was not satisfied. He fell in with 5 other ascetics, joining them in the practice of putting the body through severe austerities. Siddhartha did this until he became emaciated and eventually collapsed.

The biography states that the prince was revived by a village girl who gave him milk-rice. Siddhartha realized that asceticism was a dead end, and recalled a time back home when his mind had attained a state of deep calm and peace while he sat under a tree. Feeling sure that this was the mental state he needed to cultivate in order to find the solution to his problem, he took a seat under a pipal-tree and vowed not to move from it until he had won through to complete enlightenment. Now taking adequate nourishment, he was able to keep meditating, and in time a series of profound insights came to him, culminating in the complete enlightenment that solved the question of how suffering can be ended. At that moment, Siddhartha became the Buddha, the “awakened one.”

The answer to your question, then, is that the Buddha tried various methods to achieve enlightenment, but none of them worked until he devised a method of his own and followed it to the end. This became the method that he taught, and that his successors around the world continue to teach today.
