Many substances expand on heating, Air & water for example since their density decreases and volume increases, hence the expansion. They start to move more slowly and get closer together so the substance contracts.

When heat is added to a substance, the molecules and atoms by vibrate faster. As atoms vibrate faster, the space between atoms increases. The motion and spacing of the particles determine the space of matter of the substance. The end result of increased molecular motion is that the object expands and takes up more space.
