Explain why a transformer will not work on DC.

  • Transformer works on the principle o electromagnetic induction.

When we use DC source, magnetic field produce by DC is uniform and does not change. Whereas if we use AC source the current changes with time and thus varying magnetic field is produced.

Ultimately transformer cannot work on DC because primary coil will create uniform and constant magnetic field which will fail to induce EMF in secondary coil.

  • Coil of transformer need to be laminated to reduce eddy currents.
  • Transformer that has more turns in secondary coil than primary coil is called step up transformer because it increases voltage. A transformer transfers power from primary to secondary coil. Since power must stay same, if voltage increases the current must decrease.
