Explain why aluminium can not be extracted by reducing alumina with carbon.

This is because aluminium is quite reactive and may get contaminated on the use of coke as reducing agent

Aluminium is more reactive than carbon and it has more affinity for oxygen, therefore, alumina  cannot be reduced with carbon but is extracted by electrolytic reduction
