Explain why aluminium reacts with hydrochloric acid slowly in the beginning

The dilute acid has to break down the Al2O3 where as in some other reactions this process is not necessary.

Aluminum reacts slower then similar metals such as Magnesium or Zinc because of an Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) layer.
