Here is your answer
It takes the body a lot of time to use the glucose that is locked away in bread: first the polysaccharides must be cut up in the intestine. Glucose in a drink can have a much faster effect on availability of fuel for the body.
Of course this would only help if the athlete would otherwise not be able to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Whether that is the case is a totally different question…. Frequently using a glucose drink when the body does not need more glucose can certainly have (long term) adverse effects.
