Explain why an electron cannot come out of the metal surface on its own?

As electron is bounded with nucleus with some energy (for example electron in first orbit is bounded with nucleus with -13.6eV energy) so we have to give metal surface energy equal to which it is bounded(i.e.13.6eV) with nucleus to free it from nucleus.
