it is because every atom has a unique atomic number where has the same atomic mass can be shared by two or more atoms so the properties of the two atoms sharing the same atomic mass might look same but it is not so.

Chemical properties depends on no of electron nd no. Of electron is equals to the atomic no.
So atomic number is more important.
