carbon forms compounds only by covalent bonding bcs of its tetravalency. In covalent bonds the elements share electrons present in their valence shell.In case of carbon, as its valency is 4 it requires a lot of energy to either loose or gain electrons so it shares them with other elements to form compounds.

It forms millions of compounds with other elements because of catination i.e self linkage property.
