Because carbon is a tetravalent element means that it has a large valence of 4 and it does not gain or loss electron (due to energy consideration) to form a compound. So carbon only share electrons to combine with other elements and form covalent bond.

Carbon form a large no. of compound:– 1)because it has self linking property due to which it combine with itself and form a long chain, this property is known as catenation.

2)It is a tetravalent element.

Answer:

The reasons for the formation of large number of compounds are: 1. Tetravalency: As carbon has 4 electrons in its valence shell and hence can share these electrons with other elements to form large numbers of compounds. It can share its 4 electrons with different atoms or molecules thus generating enormous compounds.
