Explain, why cosA= √(1-sin^2A) is the only value we have taken. Why not the negative one?

Raen: Actually, they haven't taught us unit circle trigonometry at ALL. The approach has been with only acute angles in general. Thus, it actually hasn't been mentioned they are acute. My major worry is... If this question is asked formally in some examination ( based on this book), then what should I write? Should I mention the third quadrant?
