Imagine an electron inside the moving rod(moving at the velocity of the rod not considering magnetic field). Now use the right hand rule (or cross product, whichever feels better). At that instant the electron will get an upward force.

Consider simply that the electron doesn't have space to move in the horizontal direction relative to the rod and it you understand that it goes straight upwards.

The diagram is totally wrong. The current should go in the right and not in the left.
