A paratrooper opens parachute immediately after jumping from aeroplane to increase the air resistance and land safely on the ground.

Immediately after leaving the aeroplane, a paratrooper gets accelerated downwards due to the force of gravity( acceleration due to gravity).

As the speed of the paratrooper increases, the air resistance also increases. When the terminal velocity is reached, the weight and force of air resistance are equal and so the speed becomes constant at that moment.

The parachute when opened at this moment increases the air resistance and slows down the paratrooper.
