This is due to the law of conservation of momentum. According to Newton's third law, Every action has an equal and opposite reaction; when the gun applies a force on the bullet to shoot it out of the barrel, the bullet applies an equal and opposite force on the gun but due to the higher mass of the gun, it moves with a much lesser acceleration. So, due to the reaction force applied by the bullet on the gun, the gun recoils back.
