As Historians find it easier in extracting the conclusion and of events in modern period, it is because of the availability of exact and accurate timeline. By referring the same timeline which goes for multiple events happening together in a given period, is another reason why it is much reliable.
While older records of events is not much reliable to study on. So it take a very complicated method of observation to extract conclusions about earlier trade.
Even the records were either destroyed or a way too messy than that of modern records.
