explain why hydrogen and oxygen are considered as elemets whereas water as a compound

water is compund because it is made up of two elements h and o but hydrogen and oxygen are not made up of other elements

Well hydrogen and oxygen are individual elements while water is a combination of H2O
Water does not follow the individual characteristics of Hydrogen or Oxygen. Also water can only be separated by chemical means like any other compound. Therefore its a compound
