Water is a compound because in water we are unable to see the particles and we can not separate the molecules of the water(H₂O).

In mixture you can clearly see the particles and separate the particles easily.

But in water you can not separate the Hydrogen or Oxygen from the water.

For that water is a compound not a mixture.

Answer:

1- A substance composed of two or more elements not depending on the ratio is known as a mixture. The constituents of a mixture can be separated by physical or mechanical methods. For example a mixture of sulfur and iron filling.

2- A compound is a substance which is in a fixed ratio and can be separated by electrolysis or chemical methods.

3- Water is a compound because it is made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a fixed ratio.

4- Electrolysis and chemical means are used to decompose the water molecule.

5- Water exists as a molecule which is the smallest unit of a chemical compound.
