Concept Introduction:

In a molecule, a base that accepts proton and a acid releases proton. So, Ammonia is basic because its nitrogen atom readily accepts a proton. Ammonia(NH3) have lone pair of electrons and also it considered as a Lewis base.

Explanation:

We have been given a question that why NH3is basic while BiH3 is feebly basic.

We have to find the perfect explanation for this question.

NH3 is much more basic than BiH3, on the basic of electron density on the central atom. Atomic size of N is 70 pm and Bi is 148pm, so atomic size of N is much smaller than Bi. Although, both NH3 and BiH3 have lone pair of electrons on the central atom.

Final Answer:

NH3  is much more basic than the BiH3, on the basis of electron density on the central atom. Both NH3 and BiH3 have lone pair of electrons on the central atom and hence should behave as Lewis bases.
