The river valley projects in India are called as multi purpose projects because they serve several functions simultaneously. These kinds of projects are also called as the “New temples of Modern India”.
The multiple functions that are served by the river valley projects are:
1. Generation of power and electricity
2. Irrigation – to irrigate the fields during dry seasons and in dry areas through perennial canals
3. Flood control
4. Soil conservation
5. Water management – by building reservoirs
6. Fish breeding – in dams and reservoirs
However, the building of river valley projects comes with its own disadvantages too.
