a heavy leather ball and a light tennis ball of equal size are kept on the flours of a moving train when train suddenly stopped, they are set in motion.in which direction will they move? which one of them will attain higher velocity? ( assume that friction is same for both)

In general, the second ball would have a horizontal velocity or the acceleration component, because the vertical velocity component of the ball would be equal to the first ball, which is also zero.

Normally, the vertical acceleration also acting on both the balls would be same, in addition to this the gravitational acceleration.

On the whole, the vertical distance is covered by both balls in equal and the time also equal. s = ut + (1/2) at^2 and u is zero

Solution:

  • When lighter and heavier balls are kept in a moving train the balls are habituated for the train's velocity.

When the train suddenly stops the balls keeps on moving as they are in motion when the train is moving.

So, when the brakes are applied the balls will move in the forward direction due to the inertia of motion.

  • As the force applied is the same for both balls, the lighter ball attains more velocity as acceleration is inversely proportional to mass.

  • (F = ma)

Note:

Friction is also the same for both balls as the train's surface is the same.

Final answer:

The light tennis ball will attain a higher velocity.
