Explain why size of magnesium plus 2 smaller than magenisum

Mg have 12 electrons and 12 protons which attract the electron uniformly . as Mg have 2 electron in outer most shell and it donates it to form Mg+2 cation but now also it have 12 protons that hold the 10 electrons left very tightly so thalt the outer most shel become shrink and size of cation becomes small than parent atom.
