Explain why sliding friction is slightly less than static friction.​

The sliding friction is less than static friction because of the interlocking of irregularities in the two surfaces. When the object starts sliding the contact points on its surface, do not get enough time to lock into the contact points on the floor. So the sliding friction is slightly less than the static friction. HOPE this helps

Sliding friction is slightly less than static friction because when there is an occurrence of sliding friction there is always some amount of force acting on the moving body to keep the moving body in motion but in static friction no force is acting on a static body and therefore the frictional force is more.
