If a metal is reactive , its surface may be attacked slowly by the air and moisture present in the atmosphere.

The metal reacts with  oxygen and moisture of air to form their respective compounds and it makes the metal to loose its shine and metal becomes porous. This process is called as Corrosion

The eating of metals by the action of air , moisture or chemicals on their surface is called as Corrosion.
Most of the metal corrode when they are kept in damp air.
example:

Rusting of Iron:
when an iron object is left in damp air for a longer time, it gets covered with a red brown substance called Rust.
This process is called Rusting.
