High speed winds reduces the air pressure above the roof. While the air pressure below the roof is high which pushes the roof upwards. This is the reason why thatched roofs gets blown off when there is severe storm.

Thatched roofs get blown off when there is severe storm because -
• The thatched roofs are very weak and constructed loosely on the main structure of the house.
The weight of the roof is also very less.
• And, when a severe storm occurs, the wind also blows at a very high velocity.
This high velocity wind can apply great amount of force on the objects in it's flow path.
• When this high amount of force is applied by the wind ,the weak thatched roof cannot tolerate that much amount of force and gets blown away.
