Explain why the atomic size of magnesium is less than that of sodium

Sodium and magnesium are belong to the same periodic table having 1 valance electron in valance shell which is M shell.Mg has the same valance shell but has 2 electron in it.
The higher no. of proton in Mg pulls the electron towards the nucleus and decreases the atomic of Mg atom.
