It is because the map we see is a projection of circular (spherical) map. In sphere, the lengths of upper latitudes go on decreasing. But on rectangular paper, all latitudes are of same length as equator. So, the countries, islands or oceans on higher latitudes get stretched on rectangular map. The poles are actually points. But we see them as a line ( upper and lower edge) of rectangular paper. That's why all the areas in polar regions appear greater in size than original size.
The Russia appears more in size than africa, but it is not. We see the Antarctica as a whole landmass in southern area but it is too small that it appears.
This projection is known as Mercator projection.
