beause they react with some gases like oxygen , carbon dioxide , etc. and forms an coating on its surface . foe ex- the statue of Liberty was in brown colour at the time it was gifted by the France to the USA . it become blue after some time

metals get exposed to air and react.iron gets rusted to form iron oxide.silver or copper objects react with sulphide.
