Because at different areas the gravitational pull is different. At the centre of the earth the gravitational force is maximum and at the poles it is least

on the poles, the earth is little flat, so the radius of earth is less, so distance between object and center of earth will be less. so g will be more .on the equator, the radius will be more and so distance will be more. so g will be less
