the water in dam has a large amount of mass as well as it is in direct application with acceleration due to gravity at a greater height.......so according to the equation potential energy = mgh
this water is kept in a steady state so the relative velocity of water canals is zero causing kinetic energy equal to zero......
so the only energy that the water in dam have is potential energy....

water is stored in a dam has potential energy because of its altitude. If released the water that flows out of the dam can be used to put a wheel that powers a generator
