We can easily move our hands in air because the particles of air have large spaces between them and less force of attraction.

Whether, in a plank of wood, the particles are closely packed and the force of attraction is also high.

Due to this reason we can easily move our hand in air but not in a plank of wood.

Air is a gas, it has more space in between particles. But solid block of wood is rigid, hence it is difficult to move our hands through it.
