we breath fast to inc the amount of oxygen available to our body .
so when we do some hard physical activity like running our body cells also work hard and so a lot of co2 is produced and hence to get rid of this co2 oxygen is pulled in and also when oxygen reacts with the food stored in our cell in mytocondria it produces ATP which is the requirment of the human body for energy and hence we breath faster

Answer:
An athlete needs to supply extra energy to his muscle cells which have worked hard during running. For this, he breathes faster and deeper so that more oxygen is supplied to the cells. This speeds up the breakdown of food and as a result, more energy is released.
