Explain with a help of an activity which shows that particles of matter are very small
Answers
5 Test tubes filled with water upto 3/4th, a dropper, small crystals of KMnO4
Method:-
In the first test tube , drop one small crystal of KMnO4 and then cover the mouth of the test tube with thumb and shake the test tube vigorously.Observe the color of the solution.
After that with the help of a dropper, take out a few drops of solution from it and pour into second test tube and cover its mouth to shake its contents vigorously. Again observe the color of the solution. Repeat this procedure for test tube no. 3,4 and 5 and observe the color change.
Observation:
One can notice that the color of solution in the first test tube is deep pink. But it starts becoming less and less pink in the successive test tubes till the pink color is hardly visible.
Conclusion:
The color of KMnO4 fades on dilution with water since the particles of KMnO4 decrease gradually from first test tube to the last.
Therefore, one can conclude that the particles of matter are very, very small and are not visible to the naked eye.
