Explain with an activity how the frictional force is directly proportional to normal force?

Suppose that a boy is riding a cycle at slow speed. He needs small energy at slow speed but as he increases his speed of cycle it requires more paddling due to the frictional force.So he has to apply more force than it to make the cycle in motion.
