Answer:

Fermentation is an aerobic process. Respiration in the absence of oxygen is called anaerobic respiration and is also referred as alcoholic fermentation. It takes place in many microorganisms like bacteria and yeasts and some intestinal parasites like ascaris. And in human muscles.

The difference between anaerobic respiration and fermentation is that one is intracellular whereas the other is extracellular. In both the process the food is completely broken down in absence of oxygen to form ethyl alcohol (alcoholic fermentation) or lactic acid (lactic acid fermentation) and carbon dioxide and ATP.

In the process carbon dioxide is released can be shown through activity.

Materials required – test tube, beaker, a stick of KOH (potassium hydroxide), a few germinating seeds, forceps and clamp.

Method- Fill the test tube with mercury, invert it without letting air bubbles to enter into the beaker filled with mercury solution. To it insert the germinating seeds just below the mouth of test tube.  The seeds being lighter will rise up at the top. This set should be left for several hours till the process of anaerobic respiration begins.

Observation- The mercury level goes down. As we insert the KOH stick in the test tube the level of mercury goes back to previous level.

Inference- The gas produced in this process was CO2 which led the mercury level down. The KOH absorbed the gas and again mercury rose to its previous level.
