Biological Magnification is the process of increasing toxic substances or chemicals within organisms that occurs in each stage of the food chain.

Food Chain is the process in which energy in the form of food is transferred from one organism to another. Below is the illustration:-

  • Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Eagle
  • Grass/Plant → Insect → Lizard → Chicken → Human

It can be seen how from one organism is eaten for food and the energy is transferred from one organism to another.

According to biological magnification, the last organism will have the most toxins in the food chain as the toxin accumulates from all the organisms.

  • For example: In the second food chain Human has the greatest toxin compared to any other organism.
  • Toxic from grass is transferred to insects, from insect to lizard, from lizard to chicken and at last from chicken to human.
  • At each stage the toxic buildup, accumulation increases.
  • The toxic substances include mercury, pesticides etc.
  • The last organism in every food chain or food web is highly affected by toxic matters.

Biological Magnification occurs because some of the toxic substances don't get filtered out of the body.

Answer:

Explanation:

  • What is food chain? Food Chain is the process in which energy in the form of food is transferred from one organism to another.
  • Example-

Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Eagle

Grass/Plant → Insect → Lizard → Chicken → Human

  • Here we can clearly see how one element is depend on other.
  • Energy flow is the flow of energy through living things within an ecosystem.
  • All the living organisms can be classified into producers and consumers.
  • Each level of food chain is tropic level.
  • It is important to maintain ecological balance.
  • Energy flow is also known as calorific flow.
  • As per above example, we can see that all living organisms are depend upon another.
