the sound needs a medium for its propagation . it cannot propogate through vaccum . it can , however propogate through all the three states of matter , i.e. solid, liquid and gasses.
the speed of sound through air is about 330m/s whereas its speed through water is 1,500m/s . sound, thus, propogates much faster than through liquids as compared to gases.wheras the speed of sound through solid is much faster than liquids .
