The northern plains with their vast level land, high population density and rich agricultural resources provided the most favourable condition for their growth. In the hilly terrains of the peninsular region, railway tracts are laid through low hills, gaps or tunnels.

India, has uneven distribution of population due to several factors like (a) Low birth and high death rates areas. (b) Topography Rugged terrain and unfavorable climatic conditions are primarily responsible for . sparse population in states like Rajasthan and the hill states.
