In May, 1998 USA imposed economic sanctions on India owing to the series of nuclear tests done by India, which perturbed the entire world.

According to President Clinton, the economic sanctions were mandatory as per US law because India was an undeclared nuclear state and yet it exploded nuclear device.

Under the US economic sanction on India, all aid to the nation was forfeited except aid on humanitarian grounds.

No credit was to be extended to India from the US, export of certain defense and technological materials to India was banned, and withdrawal of funds to the country by international financial institutions.
