Having less sodium in your diet may help you lower or avoid high blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. Most people eat too much sodium, often without knowing it. The average American eats about 3,400 mg of sodium a day.

Dear Student,

◆ Food must have limited amount of salts -

  • Salts contain sodium chloride which is associated with retention of water in body.
  • This excess water causes hypervolemia and leads to increased blood pressure i.e. hypertension.
  • Hypertension can further cause atherosclerosis, diabetes, stroke, myocardial infarction, etc.
  • To prevent all this, food must have limited amount of salts.
  • Recommendation is daily salt intake should be restricted to 5 g/day.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
