◆ Upward and downward movement of diaphragm occurs consecutively because -

• Normally, inspiration is active process while expiration is a passive process.
• During inspiration, diaphragm is contracted (downward movement) to expand thoracic cavity.
• During expiration previously contracted diaphragm gets relaxed (upward movement) to reduce volume of thoracic cavity.
• Therefore for synchronized inspiration and expiration, upward and downward movement of diaphragm occurs consecutively.
