Explanation:One of the main reason for Rice being subsistence crop in Odisha but not in Punjab and Haryana is the dietary patterns of these regions. In Odisha, Rice is staple food whereas in North Indian states it is wheat , so in Odisha most of the cultivated Rice is consumed by the farmer and his family but in case of Punjab and Haryana it is sent to the Market for commercial gain.

Another major difference is the per capita yield which is low in the state of Odisha.

Odisha still practices primitive methods and the lack of use of fertilizers , irrigation , HYV seeds etc also affects the overall yield but this is not so in the case of states like Punjab and Haryana where agricultural practices has improved tremendously and modern methods are being used.
