The description more or less explains it. There are two “shoes” made of heat resistant material inside a small metal drum with very thick walls. The distance between the shoe and the walls is as small as possible. The drum is linked to the wheel, so it rotates when the wheel does.
Through a system of levers or hydraulics, a press on the brake lever or pedal is turned from a long movement with little pressure to a very short movement with a lot of pressure expanding the shoes outwards so they press on the drum. The friction causes the drum and therefore the wheel to slow down.
