Explain working of thermometer

it has a mercury in it.when temperature increase the level of mercury goes upward to the temperature level.

thermometer is an instrument used to measure the temperature.
if the tip of the thermometer is heated or get in contact with heat the mercury in it raises or expands according to the temperature.
