Tunnel Diode Oscillator. The oscillator circuit that is built using a tunnel diode is called as a Tunnel diode oscillator. If the impurity concentration of a normal PN junction is highly increased, this Tunnel diode is formed. It is also known as Esaki diode, after its inventor.

The idea is that two electro magnets are connected to an amplifier - one to the input, the other to the output - and when they are brought together with a tuning fork in the middle the whole thing will start to oscillate - just as if you put a microphone too close to the speaker in a PA system.
