Reference: - These lines has been taken from the poem ‘Mercy’ composed by William Shakespeare.

Context: - Portia is in disguise of a doctor of law. She appeals to Shylock to be kind towards Antonio. She showers her praises on the quality of mercy.

Explanation: - According to Portia, mercy is a noble virtue. This cannot be forced. It means one can never be forced to show any kindness towards someone. Mercy is a natural quality. It is compared to rain falling on ground very slowly form the sky. It falls freely. In the same way, kindness flows freely form the hearts of the men.

She further says that mercy is double blessing. It blesses both – the giver as well as the receiver. The man showing mercy does something noble. Similarly, the man who receives it, is equally fortunate. Mercy is most powerful quality of a person who too becomes most powerful.
