An object will float on the surface of water when it has density less than that of water because it always displaces more weight of water than its own weight, and as the buoyant force is more than its own weight, therefore it floats.

Objects either float or sink in water due to the density of the object. If the object's density is less than water than it will float of if it is more it will sink. Furthermore if an object who's density is more than water made hollow it will float or if an object with less density than water is made holes it will sink.
