 {x}^{2}  + 12x \\  =    {x}^{2}  + (2 \times 4 \times x) +  {4}^{2}  - 16  \\ = (x + 4)^{2}  - 16

(b)

 { x}^{2}   - 6x + 1 \\  =  {x}^{2}  - (2 \times 3 \times x) +( {3}^{2} ) - 9 + 1 \\  = ( {x - 3)}^{2}  - 8
