It began with a sense of gladness. As time went by, the feeling grew on me and I could sense that it was not just gladness; it had deepened and turned to joy. My happiness knew no bounds. The degree of happiness kept on increasing till I was elated. This was when I thought I would burst with joy. And then, when my emotions stabilised a little, I found myself in a state of bliss, where nothing but my joy and me existed.

The synonyms used for ‘happiness’ include gladness, joy, elated (elation) and bliss. Though there is no strict measure of what portrays less joy and what depicts a great amount of happiness, ‘gladness’ is generally associated with a pleasant level of happiness. ‘Joy’ is a little more intense, while ‘elation’ is quite intense. ‘Bliss’ is a very satisfied kind of joy. Something like what you would feel when you don’t want anything else in the world.
